KUTZTOWN, Pa. – (Feb. 9, 2021) – Kutztown University recently received a transformational gift of more than $900,000 from the estate of Gladys M. Schaefer Miller ’44 and Clifford F. Miller. This donation will be used for scholarships to students majoring in elementary education and will enhance their previously-established endowed scholarship.

“I am humbled by this extremely generous gift,” said Dr. Kenneth S. Hawkinson, president of Kutztown University. “The Millers were passionate about education and this gift ensures their legacy lives on through the students who benefit from their generosity.”

Clifford Miller died in April 2020 at the age of 97 and Gladys Miller died Aug. 14, 2019, at the age of 96. Lifelong educators themselves, Clifford was a professor at Lehigh Carbon Community College from 1968 to 1987. Prior, he taught at William Allen High School. Gladys taught elementary school in the Allentown, Reading and Hamburg School Districts until her retirement in 1980.

Gladys served on the Kutztown University Alumni Board for four years and was a former board member of Delta Kappa Gamma. She was a frequent attendee of KU’s Ladies Tea and was a contributor to the Ladies Tea Endowed Scholarship, the Education Dean’s Scholarship and the Kutztown University Annual Fund.

“I am grateful for the generosity that the Millers showed KU through the years,” said Alex Ogeka, executive director of the Kutztown University Foundation. “This donation will make a difference in the lives of future educators for generations to come.”
