Golden Bear Ambassador: Teresa M. Tieman Detweiler ’10

Teresa M. Tieman Detweiler ’10 only attended Kutztown University for three semesters—but those three semesters were life-changing.

For Teresa, academic success would come from engaging with a truly supportive environment. Though she always knew she was interested in studying psychology, Teresa enrolled in three different schools before making her way to KU.

“They weren’t the right fit,” Teresa explained. Ultimately, she transferred to KU, where she commuted to campus and found incredible support from the Psychology Department and professors like Dr. Derek Mace and Dr. Michele Baranczyk. In the areas she’d once struggled, she now excelled.

“KU was absolutely where I needed to be,” Teresa said.

Falling in love with her studies, Teresa would join a psychology honor society—and in 2010, graduate summa cum laude. Later, the same honor society would ask Teresa to come to campus and serve as a keynote speaker. When she addressed the new inductees, it was a full-circle moment.

Teresa went on to study at Alvernia University, where she acquired a master’s in counseling in 2013. Today, she works for the Council on Chemical Abuse and serves as a member of Alvernia’s Alumni Council. Then she saw the option to become a Golden Bear Ambassador for KU.

Teresa had already been thinking about getting more involved with her fellow Golden Bears: “I thought this would be a great place to start.”

As a Golden Bear Ambassador, Teresa can reconnect with KU in a simple but meaningful way. The opportunity is available to any KU alum or friend who gives a minimum gift of $18.66 and is open to spreading the word about alumni happenings.

Getting involved in your community is important, and as Teresa put it, “Kutztown is part of my community.”
