Angela “Angie” Deamer ’01: Passing it Forward
Angela “Angie” Deamer ’01 is always up to something—in the best way. From studying at Kutztown University to one day creating the Happy Valley Hab-Aid Co, Angie has always been a hard worker who values giving back to others.
At KU, Angie studied political science and public administration. She fondly recalls classes with Dr. Jack Treadway and Dr. Roger Whitcomb as well as time spent on the basketball court with Coach Steve Hahn. Once a KU Foundation scholarship recipient herself, Angie still remembers being awarded the Jennie C. Schwoyer ’07 Basketball Scholarship. The game would push her to become her best self.
“Coach Hahn was very present in my life,” Angie shared. Under his guidance, she became an accomplished athlete—something that continues to drive her. Recently, she joined the Harrisburg Havoc semi-pro women’s football team.
However, when asked about her KU athletic accolades, Angie didn’t dwell long. “The things I’m most proud of,” she said, “are my scholarships.”
The Holland Direct Scholarship Fund and the Women’s Basketball Alumni Scholarship are helping KU students better themselves. It’s a reflection of Angie’s own time at KU and a testament to the incredible life she built after her graduation in 2001.
First working in legal support staff roles, Angie eventually became a case worker. This took her on a new path: toward creating Happy Valley, an agency that provides home and community-based services for individuals with intellectual disabilities. Happy Valley filled one need in her area, but she’s always on a mission to fill more.
In Mifflin County and beyond, Angie has supplied families in need with bikes, toys, and Halloween costumes. Recently, food insecurity has been on her mind, and she has been working to alleviate it—sometimes by personally shopping for others.
Angie’s generosity at KU and within her community is clear, but her outlook is simple and genuine. “If I can change or reach even just one person, I did my job,” she said.
